| | The increasing numbers of autistic children | | It had come to my attention that there is a growing concern of the number of autistic children being born. What is going on here? Is it the water, pollution, contraceptives, what? are there any statistics out there?
I met a lady once, who said at one time that she was autistic. I thought she had said artistic, and so I said, me too! the blank look on her face said it all. "no autistic! not artistic!" I have also heard that these people have an innate beauty to be able to communicate without speaking.
| | Eye Q, does it help children with learning disorders or ADHD? | | I have heard about this 'miracle' oil for children with ADHD, and wonder if it's anyone here that tried it on or have heard about it working? It contains fish oil and evening primrose oil, and that this combination help children develop brain and eye function. The study I read was in Swedish so a lot of you might not be able to read it, but from what I saw it worked amazingly well. You can look at the before and three months after writing test here: www.iqmedical.se/barnskolan.htmDo you know of any other medication for children with learning disabilities and difficulties concentrating? Does any of them work? | |
| | im worried about my little brother | | My little brother has completely given up on going to school/ leaving the house. He's just turned 15 and over the last few months my mother and i have been trying everything to get him to go to school. It terrible but we've even tried bribing him. My nan gave us all £100 each but my brother's was on the condition that he goes to school for a month. It's bad but it's the last resort solution. He was doing quite well but then last week he relapsed and didn't go at all.I don't think he's lazy, and I know it's not the worst think in the world but I think he's actually got serious self-estee issues, because when we ask him why he doen't want to go he says it's cause he's scared of being laughed at, scared of falling over infront of people, scared of having to speak infront of the class and so on. The teachers really don't understnd at all, his headteacher just thinks he can't be bothered to put the effort in.I feel so bad for him, because I know he's a bit shy, and he suffers severely with dyslexia which holds him back on simple reading and writing tasks. But at the same time he can't help himself if he doesn't face it.Has anyone experienced that sort of thing with... | |
| | Update on the DORE programme for kids with ADHD and other Disorders | | My daughter is 12 and has ADHD.My other discussion asked about the DORE programme. Well, I have since found out that it costs $5000 (Aus) to do the course and that sort of money is out of our reach. So, I did some searching and have found another programme that sounds similar in the USA called the Learning Breakthrough Programme. Has anyone tried this or done it? The cost is less than $1000 and includes videos and all equipment. Here is the web site if anyone else wants to check it out.http://www.learningbreakthrough.com/index.php

| | Labeling a kid with ADHD in school | | My son was diagnosed this year, in kindergarten, with ADHD. We are now in the process of filling out paperwork for him to enter first grade and there are many questions regarding health concerns, medications your child is taking, etc. I can understand their need for such information, but I do not want my child to be "labeled" before he enters his new class. He is very bright and with medication we have seen a huge improvement in him. I am wondering how others handle this? | |
| | Those with BPD, if you could turn it off like a switch, would you? | | This came upin one of the international (based in the UK) studies/surveys - and they found that a significant portion of respondents actually said no. I was one of them - which surprised even me. Maybe its because I was diagnosed so late (in my 30's - I was misdiagnosed with ADD, GAD, learning disorders etc etc since childhood). Even though the rages and downswings could be so awful (before the meds) the super productivity I could get out of the manic periods would be really hard for me to give up, even when it costs me. So I'm kind of fence-sitting on that issue. What do you think? | |
| | Did you know that your lipstick may be causing your asthma? | | Or may be a trigger for your asthma like symptoms - trouble breathing or wheezing or your headaches or nasal congestion? Many lipsticks and other cosmetics contain aspirin or a salicylate compound that can cause these symtoms as well as blemishes, itching, irritation, stomach pain, rash and swelling of hands, feet or face. It is also a trigger for herpes sores which can appear outside the mouth, in the cheek, gums, tongue, roof of the mouth, palate, lips. If you have herpes sores, please throw away your current lipsticks, even your toothbrush - which should be changed every month or so due to buildup of germs and loss of optimal efficiency.
Lipsticks powders and foundation that contain lanolin can cause vomiting, diarreah and rash. Sharing of cigarettes, toothbrushes and yes, even lipstick can spread and menigitis and encephalitis are contagious. Feeling a little nervous - it gets worse! Know someone with breast cancer, endometriosis, reproductive disorders, birth defets or developmental disabilities and ask yourself why us? The answer could be your cosmetics. Your lipstick and nail polish - or the nail polish your little girl uses can contain ephthalates,...
| | What is a Nonverbal Learning Disability? | | Well, I need straight away to take issue with the very name of this disorder. But then, in order to understand why I have an issue with the name, you probably need to be introduced to the basic characteristics of the disorder itself. On the other hand, don't you need to know and sort of understand the name of the thing I intend to describe? But then, wouldn't it be clever to try to accomplish both at the same time? But how do I do both when neither is introduced yet and you don't know what I'm talking about and by the time I finish explaining it, I'm confused, too!;)Welcome to NLD - all grown up. As you can plainly see, if I do say so myelf, nonverbal learning disabilities have absolutely nothing to do with being, er, nonverbal! Ah - so to my original beef with the name. It is oxymoronic and yet technically accurate! It is a double-entendre-enigma most ironically frustrating to those who understand it best and most intimately - to those whose condition and lives the diagnosis so clumsily (but*very* necessarily!) tries to label. Is a nonverbal learning disability a learning disability in which the person is nonverbal? Duh! Of course......not! Well then, is a nonverbal... | |
| | sensory issues with your child? | | Im going to ask this question again, because it was one of the first discussions I started and I didnt get any responses, so maybe this time I will. I have a 2 yr old with sensory issues, she is working with a therapist but I wanted to know if anyone else knew a child or had a child that had problems with their senses? | |
